In addition a large nationwide recruitment drive has commenced with Aldi offering various roles for graduates, area management, head office and logistics roles to a new Danish IKEA-style homeware store JYSK offering 200 new roles in 15 new stores to open this year in Ireland.
Aside from these bumper announcements, demand for Cork jobs in areas such as Medical Secretary & Receptionist, Medical Admin, Bookkeeping, Administrative and Marketing areas along with the ever-flourishing IT sector is very much high.
You may be wondering how to go about it and what types of skills are most needed by employers. Perhaps a total refresh is what you need. Read on for some tips on getting yourself job-ready in just a few weeks!
- Plan & Assess – your own situation. Decide what you really want to do by going back to the drawing board and write down your skillset in detail. Look at what your soft and hard skills are and where best they could be used. List out the skills that could be transferred to a new industry. You can certainly ask friends and family what they think your skills are however a wise decision could be to chat to a career advisor or guidance counsellor so you can draw up a shortlist of possible roles, skills employers want and jobs markets to target.
Skills & Training – once you have done this then the big question you need to ask yourself is will you need to retrain or update some skills? If you are thinking of moving into a new area with a specific skill-set such as IT Security Engineer, Software Development, Project Management, Management, Finance or Web Design then more than likely you will need to qualify in this area. You will need to look into where you can do it and if you can do it part-time or evenings while keeping your day job. There are many flexible short training courses out there, so you will need to seek advice on where you can do the necessary courses and decide which method of training is best for you.- Rewrite your CV and LinkedIn– it is best start over with a blank page and use a short skills-based format which is more attractive to employers, don’t go beyond 10 years work experience. It is most definitely worthwhile getting a career advisor’s professional opinion.
- Network – speak to friends, former colleagues and associates to find out about the new career you are interested in, try to get introductions to new contacts and you will possibly get to hear about roles not necessarily being advertised.
Everyone has their own career path, we all have different ladders which we climb at our own pace depending on what our goals are in life. So, if you are feeling apprehensive and making a new jump remember these tips as confidence comes with having a well thought out plan that you can put into action when you are ready to make that move.
