There is no denying that people with a strong work ethic often go far in their careers. In fact, for someone looking to advance in their profession, a strong work ethic will keep your career moving upward. Becky Daines is the perfect example of somebody with an unwavering work ethic. After taking on Pitman’s Office IT Diploma and impressing her learning coaches, she was offered a job at her local Pitman Training centre. Since landing the role, she has risen through the Pitman ranks to become an operations manager, looking after a number of centres across the UK.
“For the past eight years I’ve been employed in a variety of job roles for Pitman Training. I must admit when I started my education journey with Pitman, I had no idea that it would change the trajectory of my career in this way. But I’m so glad that it has, and I’ve loved every minute of it! When I started out on my diploma, I formed a fantastic relationship with my learning coaches – I think that’s why I was offered an interview with the centre to become a team leader after I completed my diploma. Eight years on, I reached the position of Area Operations Manager. It’s safe to say, I haven’t looked back since taking my Pitman diploma.
“Before studying with Pitman, I worked really hard to achieve all my A-levels and a Fine Art and Art History Degree from Leeds University; however, this wasn’t something I wanted to pursue. After university, I went travelling to broaden my life experiences. I had loads of excellent skills but felt that I didn’t have much on paper for my CV. Once I returned from traveling, I started working in hospitality, although I soon realised that I wanted a new challenge. This is what spurred me on to seek out Pitman Training and really develop my skillset.
“After sitting down and talking with the team at Pitman, I knew it was the perfect place for me to learn. At first, I was apprehensive about taking a course because I learn from doing, not just watching. I also felt I needed a flexible training schedule to fit around my hospitality job. So, when I found out Pitman could support me in this, I was over the moon. The team’s course advisor helped me identify the course that best suited my ambitions, and I was away! I chose the Office IT Diploma because it helps develop all the general admin skills required for an office environment.”
Pitman’s Office IT Diploma helps students gain a key skillset most office staff must possess. On this course, you will study key Microsoft Office courses (Word, Excel, Outlook and PowerPoint), effective business communication and touch-typing.
“Because I was taking the course alongside my job, I had to learn in between my shifts, which was difficult. However, I knew the rewards would be enormous in the long run,” explained Becky.
As well as Pitman’s flexibility on where you choose to work through your course, or how fast you wish to complete it, students also receive help from a learning coach. The learning coach’s job is to provide you with extra help if you need it. So, it does not matter if you choose to learn inside the centre or from the comfort of your home – your learning coach will be on hand to help you whenever you need it.
“I think the best thing about having access to my learning coaches was that they helped me massively develop my confidence. I enjoyed my initial course with Pitman so much that I actually took a second diploma alongside my team leader role. My diploma was the Executive PA Diploma. This helped me cover a broader range of administration tasks.
“It’s clear how beneficial training with Pitman has been to my life. My advice for anyone looking to take a course with Pitman Training is that it’s a great experience and an amazing opportunity. Pitman builds you up and, if you’re like me and have an urge to understand something, they provide easy-to-understand courses. If I can do it, you can too.”
